Page 4 - 2018-01-CFR Volume 112 - So You Don't Think You Need An Under Slab Vapor Retarder In The Desert - January 2018
P. 4

(LGM) I’m going to add here information from a call
we received last week from an architect in Tucson,
Arizona with a flooring failure in a new building with
slab on grade construction. The specifications writ-
ten by the architect originally called for an under slab
vapor retarder. Because of the location of construc-
tion and the General Contractor and others insist-
ence that moisture would not be a problem in the
slab and to save money, the installation of the vapor
retarder was eliminated. Several months later they
are experiencing adhesive oozing up from the edges
of the Luxury Vinyl Plank flooring and carpet tile. Ex-
acerbating the issue is the use of a silicate additive
to the concrete and the building not being acclima-
tized before installing the flooring material – the per-
fect storm for a flooring failure. The key however is
that no vapor barrier was used because they didn’t
think they needed one – just as Peter is stating in
this article.
